Design for Streaming Video

CREATIVE
SOLUTIONS

for
UNUSUAL
INTERFACES

Designing for television is complex and challenging. Aesthetic options like fonts and color palettes are significantly impacted by TV screen resolutions and color profiles. Controls for user interaction and navigation are limited to the basic buttons on a remote control, which means that patterns and flows which normally rely on a point, click, tap, or swipe must be completely reimagined for a remote control.

These limitations require designs for TV to be very specific and consistent. Working through these kinds of challenges has helped me to excel at thinking through user flows, app architecture, and potential edge cases. I strive to anticipate all possible paths that a user may take, and ensure that all facets of an interface remain simple and user-friendly.

CONTRIBUTIONS

As Lead Designer, I was involved in each step of the product cycle including:

  • Product kickoff: define business and user goals

  • Research: competitive analysis, reviews of user feedback & analytics

  • Architecture: sketching layouts and flows using whiteboards, paper, napkins, fruit (or whatever else is around when ideas start flowing)

  • User Interaction and Experience: creating prototypes to refine user flows and interactions

  • Visual Design: typography, color palettes, colors, images, animations, and other shiny things

  • Iteration: Review. Revise. Repeat. Reviews may include developers, stakeholders, other designers, family members, random strangers, my cat 🐈, or anyone else who has an opinion or a question about my work. (I believe good ideas can come from anyone).

  • Delivery and Follow-Up: finalizing high fidelity designs and written requirements for developers; ongoing communication with the dev team to answer questions and provide resources as needed; QA during and after development to ensure designs and features are built to spec

ITERATIONS

In addition to design for TV, I often worked in tandem with other designers to conceptualize new ideas for various layouts and devices, and to establish consistency across the entire suite of apps. Below is just a sampling of these iterations.
